Put me on the injured list My right heel started hurting really bad last week during the 4 rounds for time WOD of running 400 m/40 squats. Nothing visibly wrong on x-ray, most docs that I work with think it’s NOT plantar fasciitis (which I’m glad)…but if I continue to walk like a crazy person because of this injury, I will cause other injuries by trying to compensate! Ack!!! So, they want to put me in a walking boot just to help get me over this hump. I’m protesting for now. Any thoughts peeps? Oh, and I know you hate to hear it…but NSAIDS are highly recommended for this injury since it’s not getting better. Ice has not helped…in fact, beyond 48 hours of injury (at least in my case), warm compresses are recommended. I thought I was doing myself a favor icing it every night.
Also, how do you store almond butter? The container I bought does not say “refrigerate after opening”. Another brand I bought says to refrigerate after opening. I’m just wondering if anyone keeps it in the pantry at room temperature in spite of storage instructions?
I am hoping to make it to the 8 pm Wednesday WOD!!!
Jenn – that’s a weird one. However, we can still program around a bum heel, even if you’re in a boot. So take us up on the assessment and month of programming even if you do the boot.
I’m heading to the Kelly Starrett Recovery Seminar at CF Boston on 29 August, so hopefully I’ll come back wicked smahter.
Also, I store my opened sunflower butter in the fridge.
Tomorrow is supposed to be my rest day but there is no way I missing this workout. I am going to make a special exception to come in just to woop some ass.
I had a problem with my right tendon after a similar workout a few months back. Changing the shoes I worked out in actually fixed the problem (I was wearing Samba soccer shoes which work for a lot of people but the sole is really stiff and caused problems).
Obviously, you’re already hurt, but I would give a different set of shoes (or no shoes at all!) a shot going forward.
Ibuprofen is a no-no to some Crossfit/Paleo types, but it helped me immensely.
As for the almond butter, you can store it on a shelf, but I started keeping mine in the fridge. The oil in nuts goes rancid eventually, that’s what gives bad nuts that bitter taste. Putting it in the fridge delays this process significantly. Of course, if you finish the jar off in one sitting, you won’t have that problem!
As all the blood left my head, the nausea in my stomach rose and my hands were slipping off the pullup bar during the workout today, the one thing that kept me going was the prayer running through my head that tomorrow would be a low rep deadlift day.
Prayer answered. Don’t remember saying anything about burpees though.
In case you missed my post on the previous blog entry, your shorts/shirt are in the back of the gym in the wooden storage bins up against the wall (Top shelf all the way on the right.
@ Brian-Thanks for the info! Should I hold off on a regular WOD and email someone about setting up a time for the assessment?
@ Frizz-Thanks! I switched my shoes this morning for more heel support and will probably stop by the foot clinic for a boot fitting later today. Still limping like a crazy person. Making other parts of my body hurt I hope I recover fast from this. Bummed. Oh…and I promptly put my almond butter in the fridge! Thanks again.
Scott Q – I need to get better before I can even think about battling out a WOD with you! Although I do enjoy reading all of your bantering on the wall…that will suffice for now.
Goes up on the main blog post tomorrow, so comments lurkers get first dibs.
Will also be posting a Recovery Seminar with Tes Salb, another Nutrition Seminar with Siddharth, and a Rowing Seminar with Seamus. All hopefully will be up by tomorrow.
I missed that Damn minus sign. It should give you and all my PCF brethren a warm comforting feeling to know that I provide financial support for our government! With skills and attention to detail like I just demonstrated…it probably explains quite a bit about our country’s current financial status.
I had plantar fasciitis for years and tried 4 or 5 different foot doctors. I tried the boot, getting taped every week, NSAIDs, ice, heat, massage, insoles – pretty much everything under the sun. The last doctor that I went to ordered custom orthotics for me and the problem was gone in 2 weeks. For me, the boot was a major hassle and as soon as I stopped wearing it, my foot reverted back to the usual pain in a few days.
Lately, I’ve been working out without the orthotics and wearing Five Fingers to try to strenghten my arches naturally.
I’m not sure if your injury is chronic or acute, but if it is chronic then you might end up where you started after you stop using the boot. If this is the first time you’ve had a problem with it and you think it’s a temporary injury, the boot might not be a bad idea. Best of luck.
I am going to Brooklyn this weekend and was going to take the Vamoose bus, but I heard that there are a bunch of other PCF’ers going. Can I ride with someone or drive a group? I have a van and can seat five or six comfortably.
Since this is my first post, I’m not sure the etiquette, but here’s my email just in case.
Thanks!

Greeting from Texas ya’ll. After about a week off (which including lots of fun but not much else) I heading over to Crossfit Central to check out their gym and do a workout. Walked into FGB which actually wasn’t too bad…minus the 100+ degree heat and humidity..it felt like trying to move in a scalding swimming pool. Nonetheless it was fun and I plan to go back a few more times before I head back to Arlington. Score was 268 (110, 83, 75)
It looks like the perfect crossfitter will have a 400+ dl and a sub 2 minute burpee time.
Are all of these DL attempts dead stops at the bottom or WOD style tap and goes? Either way, my upcoming 3+ minute burpee time will keep me out of contention.
Aaron, DLs are a mix of whatever comes. Some are touch-n-go and some are deadstop, depends on the person and their individual goal of either max or technique.

Thanks for the tips on the almond butter storage. They make one with a little honey it and it only has 1 g more per serving of sugar in it compared to plain almond butter…has anyone tried it? Or should I not even be tempted?!
I’m no diet expert, Jenn, but a little sugar has a big impact on me. I ate a few jelly beans this afternoon, and I could barely keep my head off the desk. I wouldn’t bother with the honey version unless you can’t tolerate the taste, otherwise.

Meh. I don’t know how but I somehow re-tweaked my back doing heavy thrusters last week. So, when the back got tight at 255, I stopped. Still a PR I suppose for 3 sets of 5. Burpees went about as well I could expect.
I had been kind of afraid to do burpees in my Vibram Five Finger shoes, but had to go for it tonight. I think they actually helped. Jumping into the pushup wasn’t as bad on my toes as I feared and the tradeoff was it was easier to transition into a squat without the weight and bulk of running shoes getting in the way.

Lisa, I’ve already been doing CFE on my own since the CFE cert and would love to join in when I can. It gets lonely all by yourself!

Meh. I don’t know how but I somehow re-tweaked my back doing heavy thrusters last week. So, when the back got tight at 255, I stopped. Still a PR I suppose for 3 sets of 5. Burpees went about as well I could expect.

So by Brian’s scoring system: 131
Tried to do 295 and failed on rep #2.

Props to whoever programmed the 7pm playlist. Enjoyed the Wu-tang throwback mix.

Managed to pull off 250 for 5 on the DL. It was ugly, but it happened.
Burpees are another story. 3:08. I’ll take it.
By Brian’s f’ed up scoring, I think that leaves me at 63.
