Put me on the injured list :( My right heel started hurting really bad last week during the 4 rounds for time WOD of running 400 m/40 squats. Nothing visibly wrong on x-ray, most docs that I work with think it’s NOT plantar fasciitis (which I’m glad)…but if I continue to walk like a crazy person because of this injury, I will cause other injuries by trying to compensate! Ack!!! So, they want to put me in a walking boot just to help get me over this hump. I’m protesting for now. Any thoughts peeps? Oh, and I know you hate to hear it…but NSAIDS are highly recommended for this injury since it’s not getting better. Ice has not helped…in fact, beyond 48 hours of injury (at least in my case), warm compresses are recommended. I thought I was doing myself a favor icing it every night.

Also, how do you store almond butter? The container I bought does not say “refrigerate after opening”. Another brand I bought says to refrigerate after opening. I’m just wondering if anyone keeps it in the pantry at room temperature in spite of storage instructions?

I am hoping to make it to the 8 pm Wednesday WOD!!!

  2. DF Pete

    Great pic Lisa!

I have been waiting for heavy DL’s for a while. Haven’t done these in forever…curious to see where I’m at.

  3. Brian PCF

Jenn – that’s a weird one. However, we can still program around a bum heel, even if you’re in a boot. So take us up on the assessment and month of programming even if you do the boot.

I’m heading to the Kelly Starrett Recovery Seminar at CF Boston on 29 August, so hopefully I’ll come back wicked smahter.

Also, I store my opened sunflower butter in the fridge.

  4. Scott Q.

Tomorrow is supposed to be my rest day but there is no way I missing this workout. I am going to make a special exception to come in just to woop some ass.

  5. Frizz

    Jenn,

I had a problem with my right tendon after a similar workout a few months back. Changing the shoes I worked out in actually fixed the problem (I was wearing Samba soccer shoes which work for a lot of people but the sole is really stiff and caused problems).

Obviously, you’re already hurt, but I would give a different set of shoes (or no shoes at all!) a shot going forward.

Ibuprofen is a no-no to some Crossfit/Paleo types, but it helped me immensely.

As for the almond butter, you can store it on a shelf, but I started keeping mine in the fridge. The oil in nuts goes rancid eventually, that’s what gives bad nuts that bitter taste. Putting it in the fridge delays this process significantly. Of course, if you finish the jar off in one sitting, you won’t have that problem!

  6. Frizz

As all the blood left my head, the nausea in my stomach rose and my hands were slipping off the pullup bar during the workout today, the one thing that kept me going was the prayer running through my head that tomorrow would be a low rep deadlift day.

Prayer answered. Don’t remember saying anything about burpees though.

  7. DF Pete

    Ian,

In case you missed my post on the previous blog entry, your shorts/shirt are in the back of the gym in the wooden storage bins up against the wall (Top shelf all the way on the right.

    hugs and kisses.

  8. Jenn Jett

@ Brian-Thanks for the info! Should I hold off on a regular WOD and email someone about setting up a time for the assessment?

@ Frizz-Thanks! I switched my shoes this morning for more heel support and will probably stop by the foot clinic for a boot fitting later today. Still limping like a crazy person. Making other parts of my body hurt :( I hope I recover fast from this. Bummed. Oh…and I promptly put my almond butter in the fridge! Thanks again.

  9. Jenn Jett

Scott Q – I need to get better before I can even think about battling out a WOD with you! Although I do enjoy reading all of your bantering on the wall…that will suffice for now.

  10. Brian PCF

Jenn – just email Drea AT Potomaccrossfit DOT com and we’ll set something up.

  11. Brian PCF

OK, here’s the overly math involved morning leaderboard. Took the best 5RM on Deadlift (lbs) and subtracted Burpee Time (sec). Highest score wins:

    1. Jen N. 117
    2. Lindsey -35
    3. Patricia -53

    1. Rick P. 196
    2. Mike G. 81
    3. Sean C. 36

  12. DF Pete

Apparently not for the ladies :)

    Lindey’s 35 beat out Patricia’s 53!

  13. Brian PCF

That’s -35 v. -53 Pete… I was going to try to include the square root of -1 in the calculation somehow, but that didn’t seem involved enough.

Also, Jon Matzner’s Endurance and Running Seminar which will include POSE running technique is posted:

    http://www.potomaccrossfit.com/upcoming-events/running-and-endurance-seminar/

Goes up on the main blog post tomorrow, so comments lurkers get first dibs.

Will also be posting a Recovery Seminar with Tes Salb, another Nutrition Seminar with Siddharth, and a Rowing Seminar with Seamus. All hopefully will be up by tomorrow.

  14. Brian PCF

    Comment overload this morning:

PCF is now selling bottles of water. We’ve got them in the cooler in the back by the cubbies.

$1 per bottle, exact change only, grab one and give your money to the coach. No IOUs. Thanks!

  15. John F

    DLx5: 225, 225, 235
    50 Burpees: 3:58
    So by Brian’s scoring: -3

There was an interesting article on barefoot running in the Post yesterday; click my name for the link.

  16. Erika - PCF

Sigh. Brian and his f’ed up scoring methods. You have to be a math major just to figure out how you did on the WOD.

  17. Erika - PCF

Also, holy crap — how fast does that mean Jen N went on the burpees?! I’m guessing 230ish for the DL, so that means under two minutes? Damn.

  18. Sean C

First day back after being off for six weeks on military duty. It feels good now, but probably not tomorrow.

    205 – DL
    2:49 – 50 Burpees

  19. DF Pete

    Brian,

I missed that Damn minus sign. It should give you and all my PCF brethren a warm comforting feeling to know that I provide financial support for our government! With skills and attention to detail like I just demonstrated…it probably explains quite a bit about our country’s current financial status.

  21. Steve S

    Jenn,

I had plantar fasciitis for years and tried 4 or 5 different foot doctors. I tried the boot, getting taped every week, NSAIDs, ice, heat, massage, insoles – pretty much everything under the sun. The last doctor that I went to ordered custom orthotics for me and the problem was gone in 2 weeks. For me, the boot was a major hassle and as soon as I stopped wearing it, my foot reverted back to the usual pain in a few days.

Lately, I’ve been working out without the orthotics and wearing Five Fingers to try to strenghten my arches naturally.

I’m not sure if your injury is chronic or acute, but if it is chronic then you might end up where you started after you stop using the boot. If this is the first time you’ve had a problem with it and you think it’s a temporary injury, the boot might not be a bad idea. Best of luck.

Proof that crazy people go to “workout” classes like Latin Dancing. (see link at name)

  26. Kristine S

I am going to Brooklyn this weekend and was going to take the Vamoose bus, but I heard that there are a bunch of other PCF’ers going. Can I ride with someone or drive a group? I have a van and can seat five or six comfortably.
Since this is my first post, I’m not sure the etiquette, but here’s my email just in case.
    Thanks!

Nice digs, but not nearly the same energy or community at PCF. You don’t know how good we have it until you visit another affiliate. Music was lame and low volume. Brian would have an aneurysm if he saw the dumbbells piled up against the wall.

  30. Christy0530

For Brian – Was there a Lindsey at 0530? Maybe you meant Wendy?..since I know it wasn’t me! DL = 105#, 50 burpees = 5:06. Or maybe you added in the leaders from 0630? hmmm. :)

For Jenn J – I drain off the sitting oil from a new jar of almond butter when first opened…then store it in the frig thereafter.

Rich, Tes will verify the amazing feat of 5 reps at 425. Custom soundtrack and all.

Andrew the intern, welcome to the smack talkers club. You actually going to do the workout today?

  33. Rick B

… the coach was great and helped me get my first [albeit barely/sloppy] kipping pullup.

  34. Scott Q.

Reason 1 I should check the board before posting : eating crow when the proto human intern kicks your ass. Nice work buddy, you must have been flyin.

  35. Sheila Catron

I saw Seamus running on Monday. Repeat – I saw Seamus running on Monday.

  36. Rupert in ATX

Greeting from Texas ya’ll. After about a week off (which including lots of fun but not much else) I heading over to Crossfit Central to check out their gym and do a workout. Walked into FGB which actually wasn’t too bad…minus the 100+ degree heat and humidity..it felt like trying to move in a scalding swimming pool. Nonetheless it was fun and I plan to go back a few more times before I head back to Arlington. Score was 268 (110, 83, 75)

  37. Aaron - PCF

It looks like the perfect crossfitter will have a 400+ dl and a sub 2 minute burpee time.

Are all of these DL attempts dead stops at the bottom or WOD style tap and goes? Either way, my upcoming 3+ minute burpee time will keep me out of contention.

  38. Aaron - PCF

    Christy!

Why on Earth would you drain off that delicious oil from the almond butter? Stir it in the jar and keep the almond butter moist and smooth.

  39. DF Pete

Scott Q!!!!!!! Damn dude!!! 425 for 5 is solid!!!

    Nice job! Bastard! ;)

  42. Wendy

Christy0530 – nope wasn’t me. I got 125 max DL and 4:31 on the burpees. My wee little history major brain ain’t gonna TRY to do the math on that one.

  43. Rich S.

Nice work Scott…Unfortunately today is my rest day and I am travelling in the land of Paul Bunyan so I can’t do this WOD to beat you.

However, if it helps, Paul Bunyan was scared of me after I overhead squatted his blue ox…

  44. Aaron - PCF

Ummmmm, Mike, you actually got 268, which places you third on the leader board.

  45. Tes

Aaron, DLs are a mix of whatever comes. Some are touch-n-go and some are deadstop, depends on the person and their individual goal of either max or technique.

  46. Seamus

    Sheila,

That was me. I will routinely approach joggers, stop, drop into a burpee/pushup routine and then launch into the benefits of functional fitness and how crossfit will make you faster, cooler and more handsome/pretty.

  47. Andrew (the Intern)

    DL- 385
    Burpees- 1:48

Scott- I’m glad you didn’t witness it. I hope you enjoyed your 15 minutes of fame atop the leaderboard. That deadlift is still absurd though so take solace in that fact.

Emma! I can’t facebook to get you a message! Amazing the things they block here at the hospital…and consider it “internet dating.” LOL. It’s official…I’m in a boot and will have to follow your upper body workouts ;) Sad news is that with work, I’m on my feet all day and in such pain when I get home that I need to get off my feet. Anyhow…I will see how I feel when I get off at 7 before I decide on the 8 pm WOD. Send me your email address sista! Please :)

Thanks for the tips on the almond butter storage. They make one with a little honey it and it only has 1 g more per serving of sugar in it compared to plain almond butter…has anyone tried it? Or should I not even be tempted?!

  54. Lynette

I’m no diet expert, Jenn, but a little sugar has a big impact on me. I ate a few jelly beans this afternoon, and I could barely keep my head off the desk. I wouldn’t bother with the honey version unless you can’t tolerate the taste, otherwise.

And, for everyone who recommended I eat that stuff off a spoon?! argh. There’s not a darn thing wrong with my gag reflex in the mornings.

  55. Scott Q.

Jen Jett – I hope you get better soon, boot and all! Shoot me an email!

  56. MikePCF / Boston Mike

Scott, I couldn’t let Aaron the intern stay on top all alone so I tied him:

    Deadlift 375
    Burpees 1:38
    Total = 277

Nice work to the 5pm crew. Everyone put up some great numbers!

  57. Bruce

I had two goals DL >200 and 50 burpees <2:00:

  58. Melanie

    DL: 165-175-175

12 second improvement and the deadlifts felt great :)

  59. Scott Q.

Boston Mike-great work you fat bastard! I def could of gone faster on my burpees but def not as fast as you! Still, I am just overly proud of my DL, haha!

Don’t feel bad…but don’t feel good either :) Oh well…off to the Dominican Republic where I can sit on the beach, drink fruity drinks and lament all I want :)

Lisa, I’m up for some CFE training…just let me know. I also trained directly under Brian Mackenzie (author of the CFE site) for 7 months so I may have some pointers for those interested.
