Athlete Profile: Jeremy B.

Hometown: Glenarm, IL

PCF: When did you start with PCF?
December 2008

PCF: Favorite WOD
Any chipper style WOD – I love the variety and the fact that, if there’s an exercise that you’re really weak at, you only have to get through it once and then you’re done with it for the day.

PCF: Least Favorite WOD
Anything with handstand pushups – I can’t even come close to doing them and it really frustrates me.

PCF: What is your prior fitness background? What was your exposure to CF before coming to PCF?
I’ve always played sports year ’round. Primarily soccer, tennis, and lacrosse. I never really spent much time working on getting stronger despite a definite need to do so. All through college, unless you were a football player, our coaches never sent us to the weight room. I got in to lifting once I joined the Navy, got a subscription to Muscle and Fitness and followed the standard “gain ten pounds of muscle in ten weeks” plans. I had some success but was not only bored to tears but spending a ridiculous amount of time in the gym in order to get the little success that I was seeing.

I was in to Krav Maga for about three years and first heard about CrossFit from another student. I looked in to DC area boxes and really liked PCF’s foundations course because it seemed much more comprehensive than what others were offering.

PCF: Talk to us about your thoughts after completing your first WOD.
My initial plan was to do foundations and then just do the WODs at globo gym but, after that first WOD, I realized that I really loved the group dynamic, coaches, and other athletes at PCF.

PCF: Tell us a little about then vs. now with regard to your performances on a couple of the benchmark WODs. Favorite WOD?
My biggest regret is that I didn’t start tracking my times and weights from day one. I don’t think I started posting on the site until about three months in to CF. I’d really like to know what I was getting back then. That said, I’ve been really happy with my gains since I started at PCF. One thing I do know is that I was struggling with the longer WODs for a long time. Anything under 15 minutes and I was pretty confident. Anything longer and I would crash. I finally took Brian’s advice and started taking in much more good fats and that substantially improved my performance – especially in the longer WODs.

PCF: Any advice for our newbies?
Don’t cherry pick your WODs. The ones that you want to do are usually not the ones that you need to do. I’m also a big believer in taking the time to warm up thoroughly.

PCF: And finally (and most importantly) Who is the best looking and most fabulous PCF coach around?
I’ve gotta go with Alison – I mean, come on, not only is she a great coach but she brings me food every week. Who else can compare with that?

Ryan, major props for posting that. So I guess this comes down to: is the amazingly high HDL outweigh the seriously high LDL? I don’t know enough to offer a authoritative opinion. And I’m sure Ryan wasn’t looking for one…

  2. Joe

    Jeremy,

Great profile. What a pleasure it is to have you at the box. I always have something to strive for. :)

  3. Alex

    Nice profile, Jeremy!

I’m pleasantly surprised by UChicago’s gyms…they’ve got bumper plates and several bars set up on lifting platforms. Only complaint: no 15s with red tape around the rims. Did you know that 5-pound bumper plates exist? I didn’t either, before today.

  4. Rick S

Jeremy you are the man! Always posting great results for us at the 6 o clock to strive for. Keep up the great work!

Ryan (and everyone else), please, black out most of your personal info before posting something medical or personal online. Medical identity theft is HUGE!!!! It is also very hard to stop once it starts! Companies that promise to stop ID theft can’t protect it from everything (the owner of Lifelock who posts his SSN, has had his identitiy stolen more than once!)

    18:21 @ 115#
Improved Cleans – a theory…shoulder flex on box beforehand and seeing reflection in window – suddenly shoulders clearing on the way up to allow elbows to come directly under the bar instead of flexed arms to allow elbows to go out and around due to stiff shoulders.

  7. Rick B

Jeremy, great profile and great to have you at the box.

It would be an even better profile if you were doing the obligatory-PCF-travel-handstand on those rocks, but I guess you need to work on your handstand.

    19:51 with 65# squat cleans

This is totally just a burpee WOD in disguise. Burpees took up most of the time during my rounds.

Squat cleans felt solid, though. Very pleased with that.

    Great profile, Jeremy!

  9. Wendy

14:31 – no breaks. Didn’t have a sprint speed today anyway.

  10. Wendy

Oh yeah – Hang Squat Cleans at 65# unbroken and solid.

Awesome profile Jeremy. And thank you for NOT submitting the obligatory handstand pic. Where was that picture taken?

  11. Rich S.

    Nice profile Jeremy.

15:39 rx’d. I felt like I was chasing the Mario Kart ghost racer this morning with Chris and Mike’s 5:30 am times. Thankfully I had a mushroom on the final round.

  12. Jon PCF

I wanna be like Jeremy when I grow up.

  13. Rick B

Sorry Jon, but I think you’re done growing.

  14. Brian PCF

Hey Laura B! Thanks for looking out for Ryan, but we took all his personnel info out before we posted it.

    95# for first two rounds
    75# for last three

  16. Laura B

    Brian,
the personal info is gone now, but when I pulled it up this morning before work his DOB, full name, and other numbers (probably insurance numbers) were still on there. Glad they are gone now. :)

  17. Brian PCF

Laura – my bust! Thanks for the catch.

  18. Chris Wiz

Great profile Jeremy. Nobody that tall and lanky should be able to deadlift like you do. Keep up the good work.

  19. Justin

Great profile, Jeremy. I always hope for a HSPU day when we’re at the same WOD…

Warning, this might get sappy. Doesn’t matter. I’m going on a trip in October (link in name, Itinerary B), and the last time I went on a big trip I got reflective beforehand, thought a lot about my family and friends, whom and what I was grateful for, etc. Well here’s the CrossFit part. And it’s directed at all of you, whether you know me or not.

My friend and I are going to try to climb Ama Dablam which is an spectacularly gorgeous mountain in the Himalayas. While I am definitely nervous, I am absolutely not worried about my strength and fitness. I have been on a few backpacking and climbing trips in the past couple of years, and my performance compared to prior trips with the same friends was just through the roof. My favorite ego-boosting quote was from a guy (Scottish, hence the “ye”) after I had carried another guy who had hurt his knee across a *freezing* river in Glacier National Park. “Wow, you’ve got some strength in ye.” Almost as good as Alison PCF’s camera equipment lift. (Yes, still a favorite.)

But I’m getting sidetracked. Despite your having no idea, you have all played a huge part in my training, and for that I’m grateful. We’re having a little dinner/drinks/whatever as a pre-trip party at 7:30 on Saturday, September 11 at the Argonaut in DC and you are all invited. Half of you probably don’t know me and I’ve probably never said a word to you. Doesn’t matter. For the last few months, some days working out my motivation has simply been fear of this trip or I have been chanting “Ama Dablam summit day” to myself, other times I look around and see one of you working your ass off. OK that happens every day, but some days it’s more motivation for me. So thanks.

If you want to come join us, I’d love to see you there. Drop me a line at gmail, justincarter1010, and let me know, or just show up. Shoot, even if you don’t know me it could be your chance to support the Argonaut (recently had a kitchen fire) and check out H Street.

    Thanks again.

BWI Hopper Challenge is looking for judges for Nov 6-7. Good way to hang out up there for free, watch the competition and become more familiar with the movements.

    Great profile Jeremy !

and where the the Hand-Stand pose in the picture ? are you breaking the protocol now ?? :)

  22. Joe

Good luck Justin. It sounds like a lot of fun–oh, and hard work too. Chanting “Ama Dablam summit day” to yourself is better than what I usually yelp during a WOD.

  23. Rick S

Joe – Whatever it is you said last night worked! That was a great 3 -rep back squat set you did!

  24. Brian PCF

So Working Wounded Class #1 is up and running. If you have a nagging injury, I’ll be meeting with folks MWT 7pm and programming around your specific needs.

I can only take one more athlete at that time slot, so first come first serve.

When that fills up, I’m willing to start another class MWT 6pm.

Folks with a bum leg/hip/arm/shoulder/etc are perfect for this class. We build everything around what you can do instead of subbing from the WOD.

Contact me at brian@potomaccrossfit.com for more info or if you have questions.

  25. Kevin

Jeremy- great profile, you are the man! I’m glad you chose to stick with PCF after foundations, although I’m sure you miss body pump.

Brian- can you re-post Ryan’s personal info? I missed it, and Identity Theft sounds like a great way to make a few extra bucks. thnx.

    Nice profile Jeremy!

  28. Rich S.

Kevin…hit me up. I just got a new credit card in the mail courtesy of Ryan P. and looking to have a good time tonight. Let’s just say I bought a kiddie pool, marshmellows, and chocolate syrup. And it is tuesday which means Guch will be clean shaven from his sunday ritual.

  29. Steven S

Just to plug Brian’s Working Wounded training:

Brian is phenomenal at programming workouts for injured athletes. When I hurt my shoulder a few months ago, being able to do workouts (and hard ones at that — I actually made athletic progress with a sling on) was a vast improvement to sitting around and moping. And I can’t say for sure, but I bet working everything but the hurt shoulder helped me recover faster.

    I highly recommend it.

  30. LeeAnn

Excellent numbers, Ryan – and incredible given the year that you’ve had. I’m really glad things have turned out so well.

Not trying to rain on your parade at all, I just want to point out one small thing. The immediate inference here is that eating bacon and eggs every morning will make you healthy (or net you biomarkers that will otherwise indicate your relative wellness).

This inference completely ignores a host of other very critical factors. Ryan eats strict paleo; he eats high-quality grass-fed protein and supplements with fish oil; he lifts heavy regularly and doesn’t stress his body with chronic cardio; I’m guessing he sleeps 8+ hours a night since he’s doing everything else right. Eating bacon and eggs every morning *in conjunction with these other crucial lifestyle factors* may result in biomarkers as fantastic as Ryan’s. But 1) there is no causitive relationship simply between bacon and eggs and “healthy” biomarkers and 2) this is just 1 case study. We should convince Georgetown to hire 250 PCF-ers to determine if high HDL negates the high LDL (see Dan K’s question above).

All this being said – bacon and eggs are delicious and everyone should eat them everyday.

  31. Kenny V.

Jeremy, good profile. Can I take those Muscle and Fitness mags off your hands? That would be nice. I assume you had a subscription to RIPPED too. Money.

Thanks Penguin!! The hang cleans were my saving grace…rows were decent…burpees were…well…burpees. Great job 5pm!

Hang cleans were a little sloppy. Should have kept it slow and maintained. Oh well.

Programming has been great recently. Really hitting the great parts of crossfit. Nice job Aaron.

HSCs were heavy, but doable – if I had really put my mind to it, I probably could have gone through at least 3 rounds unbroken instead of the two rounds I did do unbroken. Burpees were slow, but they were unbroken. Rows were between 40 and 43 seconds, which for me isn’t too shabby.

Great profile Jeremy! It’s good to have you around at PCF – you’re always one to try to catch during the WODs.

  44. Kyle L.

Did this in my apartment gym. Subbed 30 lb dumbbells x 30 reps for the 135 barbell.

Stupid elbow pain is back – dumped 10# halfway through, and still couldn’t get my right arm all the way up in the rack on cleans. Argh.

  47. Ryan PCF

    16:13 rx’d, this one hurt.
