Come say goodbye to Barrie-
Although Barrie did not want anyone to make a big deal about his departure (really Barrie!!) he has allowed us to send him off with a beer. (and if you call him Carl he may either buy you a beer or flatten you)
Stop by the Clarendon Grill tonight anytime after the 6:00 PM WOD to wish him well.
Lee’s is leaving on Thursday and Jimmy is leaving in August. Would people decide to stay around for a while please?
Hope to see you all tonight-
June 1st, 2009 on 10:38 pm
20 minutes staring at strange, space-age machines, wondering where I put what body part, and then:
30 situps
30 pushups (last 10 knees)
30 squats
20 burpees
10 pullups on the top of some mega-machine (dead hang), interrupted several times by people wanting to use the machine.
After that, I hit the spa. Miss you guys! =)

Lynette,
The guys at Crossfit Las Vegas are great and they have a nice setup. They are located just south of the Airport
June 2nd, 2009 on 12:00 am
By the way, this is like a 30 minute workout. There is two miles of running, 80 burpees, 160 sit-ups? Wow. This should be fun.
June 2nd, 2009 on 4:38 am
Wow, this one’s going to take a while. What exactly is a farmer’s carry? Never done that one before. It’s 4:35 AM and I’m just finishing up preparing for the movers, which means I’m going to sleepwalk through this WOD. Oh well.
Erin, thanks for organizing. You rock!
PCF coaches, thank you for the very nice post above.
Erika, happy belated birthday!
I’m about to pack up my computer, so I wanted to say that I’ve had an incredible time working out with y’all at PCF. To all the PCF coaches, thank you so much for you expert guidance, your constant motivation, your amazing ability to put up with my sometimes asinine questions (especially Brian re:nutrition), and your interesting music choices (Brian again, re:Avril Lavigne). To all my fellow athletes, it’s been a privilege working out with and getting to know y’all. I’ve never met a more badass or more fun group of athletes, even on all the organized sports teams I’ve been on.
I’ve had trouble explaining the concept of our gym to people I know, both the exercises and the more social aspects of our gym. I’d get puzzled looks when I explained that some workouts last only five minutes or that we have happy hours in Clarendon. Since these conversations were mostly with non-Crossfitters, I always chalked it up to people being unfamiliar with Crossfit. But lately I’ve had trouble explaining the social aspects to people who are Crossfitters from other affiliates, and what I realized is that PCF more or less functions like an organized sports team. Furthermore, not every affiliate is as supportive, social, and dedicated as ours. That’s when I realized how unique and how cool PCF really is. Also, just as a quick aside, in researching other boxes to join in San Antonio, I’ve discovered that PCF not only has the best prices but also the best schedule.
Anyway, I’ll be back in DC frequently, and I’ll be dropping in from time to time. Thanks again for everything, and best of luck in Aromas to Jon and whoever competes in the Affiliate Cup. Take care…

Barrie, you have to continue to check the PCF blog during football season and back me up. I can’t argue withouot you. Well, yes I can
, but I’d prefer to have your assistance. I wish you the best in TX.

Guys, here’s the breakdown of suggested scaling:
Rx’d – as listed above (swapping the order of situps and Farmers Carry).
Big Dawgs
3 Rounds
Run 400m
20 SDLHP, 75/55 lbs
20 Burpees
40 Situps
100 yds Farmers Carry, 40/25 lbs
Puppies
3 Rounds
Run 400m
15 SDLHP, 55/35 lbs
15 Burpees
30 Situps
100 yards Farmers Carry, 30/15
*We switched the situps and farmer’s carry at the 6:30 am WOD to facilitate people getting in and out of the box.
**Didn’t have to cut anybody off, but we may need to stop people at 30 minutes depending on how many folks are doing the WOD and when we get started.
June 2nd, 2009 on 7:47 am
Barrie – You will be missed. Best of luck in Texas
39:4? RX’d Thanks to Brian for letting me finish.

Current Leader Board:

2. Jamie C. 39:48
3. Joe P. 40:07
June 2nd, 2009 on 7:50 am
Everybody’s scaling is listed on the whiteboard. Highly encourage scaling not only to maximize intensity, but also so you can compare yourself to a larger cohort.
If you do Rx’d on this, and there are 4 other people today that do it RX’d, you don’t have a good idea of where you fall out in terms of relative fitness.
If you do Big Dawgs or Puppies, you have a lot more data.
June 2nd, 2009 on 7:50 am
Also, I’ll be WODing with the 5 pm class.
Barrie – assuming you’re doing the 5 pm too?

Brian – If the movers get out in time, then yes, 5 PM.
June 2nd, 2009 on 8:34 am
Brian
I am confused as to when to scale. I know there are workouts when I need to scale or grab a blue band, but I was under the impression that if you can complete a workout as RX’d – while maintaining intensity – then you should strive for that. It should not matter how many other people are going for RX’d. Today I wanted that challenge. Based on my time, and the two other times I see, I would say I did a good job and look forward to seeing how I do the next time this comes around.
June 2nd, 2009 on 8:41 am
So, is the farmer’s walk just carrying the weight at your side for 100 yards?
June 2nd, 2009 on 8:46 am
4 Rounds for time – I did 3 Rds in 33:00
Run 800 Meters – 2 Rds 800m and1 Rd 400m
20 Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 75/55 lbs – 75#
20 Burpees
100 yard Dumbbell Farmer Carry, 50/35 lbs – 40#
40 Sit-ups
Terrible scaling on my part. I should have done Big Dawgs (400m). You live and you learn.
Not to make excuses, but after going to the 1900 WOD last night and then the 0530 WOD this morning. I was very tired.
June 2nd, 2009 on 8:46 am
33:59 as Rx’d…this was brutal ..my splits were pretty consistent which is good at least. (I think)
Good job 530 and 630 crew and thanks for the support on the final round.
Joe, your a beast for pushing through that last round.
Barrie, you and your prepubescent shoulders (kidding) are definitely going to be missed. Post here in advance of joining a WOD so I can try to make it in.
Scott, looking forward to your sub 30 time…and the ensuing trash talk.
Santa, for christmas I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle
That is all.

sorry for the double post.
June 2nd, 2009 on 9:04 am
4 rounds of “big dawgs” version (Brian didn’t mention scaling the number of rounds at the 5:30 class.)
400M run
20 75# SDHP
20 burpees
100 yard farmers walk with two 40# dumbells
40 sit-ups
36:46
Barrie; enjoy life in Texas. I hope you like the heat.
June 2nd, 2009 on 9:15 am
4 Puppies: 25:54
Burpees killed me as usual.
June 2nd, 2009 on 9:28 am
26:22, 4 Puppies w/ 65# SDHP & 35# DBs.
Kassi, nice job running out the farmers walks. You made it look ridiculously easy.
Rich and Joe, way to push through this Rx’d. It looked brutal but you guys kept up the intensity.
Barrie – You’ve always been encouraging and vocal in the WODs, something I love about PCF. Good luck in Texas!
June 2nd, 2009 on 10:24 am
33:05 as Rx’d – LOVED this workout! (not being scarcastic, despite the fact that it had running in it, all the other aspects played to my strengths, what few there are)
Rich S., your time was beast, but I had a secret weapon on my side: The Top Gun Soundtrack. And yes, I even WODed in Ray-ban Aviators. Not tool-ish at all.
June 2nd, 2009 on 10:32 am
Barrie –
You are always welcome back – if I hear of you being in town and not stopping by I’ll send Ian out after you.
While obviously I think PCF is pretty great, the reality of the situation is that it is people like you that make it great. Otherwise it would just be me standing around in a tuxedo T-shirt, listening to Avril Lavigne while Brian rattles off excuses, and getting my butt kicked by Aaron, Jon (and now Mike R and Seamus) while Erika tries to make me feel better about myself and Curtis complains that we’re not listening to Jack Johnson.
And what fun would that be?
June 2nd, 2009 on 10:49 am
Puppies – 28:34
June 2nd, 2009 on 11:33 am
Three plus rounds of Big Dawgs (sort of), roughly 34min for three rounds
Run 400m (walked first 200m of rounds 3 and 4)
20 SDLHP, 75# (4 rounds)
20 Burpees (managed 20 reps, 10 reps, then 2 reps)
40 Situps (did three rounds of 20 reps. I don’t know how I missed seeing the number 40.)
100 yds Farmers Carry, 50# (3 rounds)
Until I can give a good account of myself as a puppy I’m staying off the porch.

This WOD is named after/ is in memory of Petty Officer Second Class (SEAL) Michael A. Monsoor. Please read his Medal of Honor citation (link below). The term is often abused, but Petty Officer Monsoor is a truly selfless hero.
http://www.navy.mil/moh/Monsoor/
I wish I had read this before I started the WOD.
I cannot believe that the truest form of this WOD calls for a 20lb vest and 75lb DBs for the farmer’s carry.
June 2nd, 2009 on 12:14 pm
What do I do when I need a brief break at work? Start a twitter account (just search AaronPCF on twitter.com) and make pithy comments about how long workouts suck, why burpees are the devil, Dan’s haircuts, Jon being fat and slow, Brian’s poor taste in music, and bacon.
I may also post thoughts about that days workouts, tips, helpful cues, and the answer to who shot JFK. But I know most of you are just interested in the bacon.
And if that can’t get you to follow me, I’ll make something else up.
Again, http://twitter.com/AaronPCF
So the next time you get bored halfway through my blog page opus, just remember I am limited to 140 characters on Twitter.

LEES SHINGDIG INFO:
Thursday at Hard Times Cafe (Lee, this was where we first met…I remember it like it was yesterday…that flowing hair, glowing smile, pearly white teeth, six pack abs…you can really make a girl drool!) Sweet, now that everyone is creeped out, let me continue.
I will be at the 5pm WOD that day and may have to head for a couple of hours but will be back by 8:30pm or so and ready to send Lee off in style.
Barrie, no WOD tonight for me but will see you at C’grill later tonight. Got some good news about work that I wanted to thank you for but we’ll discuss tonight.
“Is this the soup line? Because I was really hoping for ice cream”

Aaron? A twitter account? Sometimes its like I don’t even know you.
Barrie – fair winds, my friend. You will definitely be missed – we always appreciated your exceptional attitude and dedication (and you help us make fun of Brian, which is a plus). Dan is right – it is folks like you that make PCF great (I admit, we’re pretty cool too, but we can’t do EVERYTHING ourselves) and keep the community going. Thanks for sharing the journey with us — and please do stop in when you’re in the area, we’d all love to keep up with you.

Aaron, if you are me it takes 40 min . . . unfortunately.
Rich, thanks so much for the extra motivation . . . much appreciated.
40:07 Rx’d (my body hurts)
June 2nd, 2009 on 1:46 pm
Well since we are sharing sweet Barrie-isms, my favorite is pretty much everytime he picked up a jump rope. Usually our neighbors come over only when we do things like Grace or Fran. But Barrie could get them to come over during Annie (50-40-30-20-10 DU’s / Situps). Thankfully, Texas is only 1 time zone away, so we should still get a nice stiff breeze from his wildly flailing arms. But as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog would say, “I keed.” He would also say something about pooping on Barrie, but that’s for later tonight at CG.
So we’ll miss ya Barrie. Don’t be a stranger- post on the board and let us know how things are rolling in Mexico, er, Texas.

Back in DC – 38:03 RX. Jamie I’m with you – Brian, way to make us feel like crap for doing the WOD RX. But thank you for letting me finish. After that much pain (especially with my gimp run)I wasn’t going to not finish – I would have finished the workout on the street and used the marble next door for SDHP.

June 2nd, 2009 on 2:16 pm
38:02- Rx’d- thank you Curtis and Adam for the extra push at the end! I definitely needed it!! My favorite part of the workout…walking with 35lb weights at my side until I get to the “big orange cone” which Curtis realized is in the bushes as I’m halfway around the block still looking for the damn cone while cursing farmers in my head. Good times. (I evened it out the next round so don’t think my time would’ve been any faster)
June 2nd, 2009 on 2:35 pm
I decided sit-ups are going to be what kills me in this workout.
But someone has to be able to break 30 minutes here. Since I have given up on using running (which I am good at) to get ahead in workouts (not worth the effort in terms of return) I am going try to cruise on the run and hopefully be fresh for the hard parts. We’ll see if that works.
June 2nd, 2009 on 3:42 pm
UI know this has been discussed here before, can you someone please post a website for some of the local farms where one can buy grass-fed beef, lamb and pork?
Thanks
June 2nd, 2009 on 3:48 pm
Hey Justin, I hadn’t advertised this yet because it’s still getting set up, but starting this weekend I’m working with a culinary school friend at a couple of local farmers’ markets. We’ve got a solid connection with Garrett Country Farms for pasture-fed beef, bison, and a whole bunch of other great stuff. (Full list to come.)
You can order for Thursday or Sunday pickup at the MD markets we’re working (Potomac and Clarksburg) or for home delivery (coming soon).
Email me at alison@humblegourmand.com and I’ll send you the product list and some more details.
For the rest of the PCFers, I will add a disclaimer that you’ll be hearing more about this as we get rolling!

This was disgustingly brutal. It’s hard to be intense for 40 minutes non-stop so my intensity was moderate to shitty. That said, this workout probably didn’t do much to develop fitness (by crossfit standards). However, because of the “I want to give up” factor it was a great gut check workout.
Though many argue that short-to-moderate length workouts are sufficient alone to develop fitness, in my opinion the occasional grinder workout develops the mental capacity to push beyond normal limits on those short or heavy WODs. If you can finish what you start on a workout like this, it makes finishing a jackie, helen, or even a filthy 50 much easier.
BTW, if we did this truly as rx’d with a 20 lb. vest and a 75lb farmer walk I think I would have gone to the ED with a-fib. I almost met my friend pukie for the first time, and I didn’t feel right for about 30 minutes afterward.
Barrie, I wish you the best in San Antonio. It’s been fun to workout out with you at PCF. Although, I’ll be moving away myself in a couple months, hopefully we’ll cross paths again at the box.

Also, while searching for videos this afternoon to brush up on SDLHP form, I found the video linked above. Recommended viewing for anyone who either needs a laugh or has a Y-chomosome. Definitely some questionable camera angles here. I was watching it and wondering when the “bow-chicka-waaa-waa” music would start, or when the “pizza delivery guy” would show up.

I was very close to a DNF. Thanks for all the encouragement towards the end. I’m not sure exactly who was encouraging me, because I actually burpee’d myself blind, but I heard you. It’s much appreciated.
Barrie, great finish today. Way to step it up in the last round – impressive. Take care and good luck.
June 2nd, 2009 on 9:05 pm
So since I never really frequent the PFC board I missed the goodbye Barrie shindig (fortunately I got to see him before the 600 WOD). And I don’t think anyone would have wanted my company after the 600 WOD anyhow. But I wanted to bid you farewell again and say you will be deeply missed. Good luck! And I concur with Erin could people not leave.

Not too bad for having a shabby back… situps were better than I thought (back-wise), but SDHPs, which I love, were not as wonderful. Tried to keep up with Guch, made some ground on burpees, but eventually, he won. Good job to Ken for flying and to Rick who was the only one to do it rx’d at 7 p.m.
Barrie, good luck in San Antonio. Good times doing the WODs together. Do let us know when you plan to visit.
And Erika I completely forgot to wish you a happy birthday at the Grill… happy belated birthday!
