Last chance to sign up for Jen Conlin’s Kettlebell Seminar on Saturday, 04 Oct, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm. Get in before it’s too late or you have to live with having never experienced the exquisitely performed one arm kettlebell snatch - tragic, tragic, tragic…

Cordain v. Campbell - The Protein Debate

Eat Local - Eat Wild.

Need to find locally grown, grass-fed meats in Arlington and Washington? You do, you just might not know it yet. Here’s a quick list of the ones I’ve been to and links to a complete list:

DuPont Circle Farmer’s Market (Sundays, 9 am-1 pm, year round) and 14th and U Farmer’s Market (Saturdays, 10 am - 2 pm, Jun 2 - Nov 24).  Since I live in Columbia Heights, these are the two most convenient markets for me.  I currently buy almost all my beef at the DuPont Market and all my pork from the 14th and U Market.  The beef has been decent for the price, but the pork at the 14th and U Market (there’s only one booth that sells pork) is unbelievable, I’ve never had better.

Consolidated list of DC Farmer’s Markets.

Clarendon Farmer’s Market, Wednesdays 2 pm - 7 pm, open year round. I’ve checked this out once or twice, there is only one meat vendor there, Babes in the Woods. The Market website is really bad. I haven’t bought any of the meat from these folks, as I am very happy with my dealer on 14th and U.

Consolidated Arlington Farmer’s Market Listing (almost all of the market websites are horrible).

Wherever you are, you can probably find a farmer from Eatwild.com. Also, there are some farms that will air-mail your meat to you in dry ice. I’ve tried both Blackwing.com and US Wellness Meats.  I haven’t had Blackwing in a while, but when I did the meat was decent and the packaging was good.  I tried the US Wellness Meats one time and was very unhappy with the packaging, some of the meat was pretty badly freezer burned because of cheap, thin plastic.

I’ll be giving the Polyface Buying Club a try in November. There are currently only openings in their South Arlington Buying Club.  Basically how this works is you place an order online, then the folks at Polyface drive up to one members house and you have a window of two hours to come to that house to get your stuff. Everything comes frozen except for eggs. From reputation and research, this is probably the best meat for the price you are going to find available in and around Arlington.  Also, Joel Salatin sounds like a badass.  Polyface is listed on the Courthouse Farmer’s Market website, but I haven’t been there so can’t confirm if that’s true.

If anybody has input on these markets or vendors, post to comments.

Joel sells at markets under the EcoFriendly banner, not PolyFace. You need to ask since everything is branded under the EcoFriendly name. These friendly folks are at the Arlington market.

    Perfecto - thanks Siddarth!

I really like the Arlington Farmers’ market at the Courthouse on Saturday mornings; a great variety of produce, plus a few meat and dairy vendors.

  5. Aaron

I’ve bought the milk and cream there a few times. It was excellent.

For those of us not so close to the city markets, do you tend to buy a bunch of meat and freeze it? Does some freeze better than others?

Also, BURPEE CHALLANGE!!!!!! It starts monday. So easy to sign up, you only have to do one. I’ll keep recruiting and then we’ll decide how to track it. Probably just on this board.

  6. JRM

    burpee challenge?

  7. Aaron

Starting Monday we’ll do one burpee. 2 burpees on the second day, 3 on the third, etc. We’ll add one burpee to it each day until we reach 100.

It can be part of your warm-up, after workout cool down, active rest, travel workout, etc. Once we get above 30-40 we’ll start to decide whether it’s ok to break them up throughout the day. Probably yes.

  8. Aaron

PS–Siddharth, next time I spell your name so drastically wrong on the white board (just realized that after reading these posts) feel free to correct me.

  9. Larry

That’s funny you said that, Aaron. As soon as I saw you write “Sidarth” I started saying “Sidarth… SidDARTH.. SiDDARTH” lol.

Ya’ll don’t realize how much better you are at both saying and writing my name than most everyone else. I had a high school math teacher call me Aardvark one day out of the blue. Apparently 7 months in his class was an insufficient amount of time to learn my name…

  12. Erika

Siddarth, that made me laugh out LOUD. In fact, I’m still giggling, and my co-workers (per usual) think I am crazy.

I’m not sure I can avoid calling you that at least once. I apologize in advance.

  13. Larry

Yeaaaa, I agree with Erika.. You probably shouldn’t have told us that, lol.

I was retarded today and showed up for a non-existent Friday 7PM WOD. Thanks to Dan for sticking around for my solo WOD and to Siddarth and Larry for staying to push me.

I’ve got improve my pull-ups (along with a number of other things) as I dropped from a set of 10 to sets of 3 and finished with sets of 2. So close to sub-10 minutes.

My rich tradition of sucking at all things pushing continued tonight on the thrusters.

Two notes for the future- don’t blow out the row- 1:50-1:55 is more than enough, and rest the thrusters in the back squat position instead of on the ground.
