I remember priding myself on a better-than-average familiarity with
the weight room before starting Crossfit. I considered myself in
perfectly acceptable shape. After years of dabbling in field hockey,
rowing, running, and weight-lifting, I had settled into my chosen
career — financial reporting — and dutifully went to the gym 3-4
times a week for long bouts of cardio and alternate body-part training
sessions. It wasn’t long before I began to chafe on both fronts.
At the urging of my then-fiance, I attended a free class at Potomac
CrossFit in October 2008. I got my butt kicked, and was hooked right
then and there. My fitness capacity has drastically improved, and
nothing is more satisfying than seeing it happen for others — the new
folks who come in, work hard, and get rewarded with strength and
stamina that seemed wholly unattainable before.
Beyond the physical achievements that have littered my first year of
Crossfitting, I can honestly — and perhaps somewhat evangelically –
say that my life has changed, for the better. I mustered the courage
to leave behind the safety of a “regular” job and start a food
business (The Humble Gourmand / Humble Cuisine). Drop me a line for
information on cooking seminars, nutrition, and Zone/Paleo meal plans.
